Car Plate Bidding in Singapore: How to Bid Without Costly Mistakes
Car plate bidding sounds simple until you reach the payment screen and realise the details cannot be changed. You are bidding for the right to use a preferred Vehicle Registration Number, or VRN, on a vehicle registered under the correct person or company.
The number may mark a birthday, familiar sequence or easy-to-remember combination. Decide your ceiling, check the registration timeline and submit only when every owner detail is correct. One wrong assumption can leave you with a number that cannot be used as intended.
What Car Plate Bidding Actually Gives You
Every Singapore vehicle must display a front and rear VRN. A new vehicle can receive a free LTA-assigned number, a retained number or a successfully bid number. Check LTA’s current vehicle registration number guide for available series, exercise dates and fees before paying.
A successful bid cannot be freely transferred. It must be made under the intended registered owner’s NRIC, FIN or organisation details. If your spouse, employer or company will own the car, settle that point before bidding.
How to Bid for a Car Number on OneMotoring
Check whether your preferred Singapore car plate number is available for the correct vehicle type. One submission may contain up to three choices in preference order. Only one number can be awarded from that submission, at the amount you bid.
The practical sequence is straightforward:
- Check the available VRNs and confirm the active prefix or series.
- Write down up to three choices in genuine order of preference.
- Confirm the intended registered owner’s identification details.
- Set a firm budget, including the service fee and any later replacement cost.
- Submit through the official OneMotoring service and keep the e-receipt.
- Check the emailed or online result on the published result date.
For eNETS Debit, check your account balance and payment limit first. Use the official OneMotoring digital services page, and never share your Singpass credentials with a dealer or third party.
Car Plate Bidding Price, Fees and Timing
As at September 2026, the minimum car plate bidding price is S$1,000 inclusive of GST, in S$1 increments. Each submission has a non-refundable S$18.53 service fee. An unsuccessful bid amount is refunded, but the fee is not.
Main exercises normally run from 1am Friday to 4.30pm the following Wednesday; weekly exercises run from 1am Friday to 4.30pm Monday. There is daily downtime from midnight to 1am, and public holidays can alter schedules. Check the live listing rather than an old screenshot.
How Much Should You Bid?
There is no perfect-bid formula. A single digit, repeated number or familiar sequence may attract more interest, but it will not make the car drive better or guarantee resale value. Treat it as a personal purchase.
Set a comfortable value and an absolute walk-away limit before logging in. Keep this budget separate from downpayment, insurance, road tax and repairs. Our guide to the real cost of buying a car in Singapore helps put that discretionary spend in context.
What Happens After a Successful Bid?
The VRN is valid for one year from 12pm on the day after results are announced. Use it during new-vehicle registration or replace an existing car’s number through OneMotoring. Replacement currently costs S$327 inclusive of GST, after which the physical plates must change within three calendar days.
An unused VRN returns to LTA at expiry. A six-month extension must be requested beforehand and currently costs S$1,000 inclusive of GST plus a S$42.51 administrative fee. Calendar the deadline when you win.
Common Bidding Mistakes to Avoid
The costliest mistake is bidding before confirming the vehicle owner’s name. Others include reversing the choices, mistyping details or overlooking the payment limit. LTA states that a submitted bid cannot be amended or withdrawn.
If the dealer registers the car with an auto-assigned number first, the S$327 replacement fee applies later. Before giving final instructions, check:
- The bid name matches the intended registered owner.
- The vehicle type and VRN series are correct.
- The choices are in the order you genuinely want them.
- The bid amount and bank payment limit are sufficient.
- The dealer knows whether to use the bid VRN at first registration.
- You have saved the result and validity deadline.
Fit the Correct Plate and Prepare the Car Properly
Use a compliant plate maker and keep the VRN clear at the front and rear. LTA’s vehicle licence plate requirements cover colours, character dimensions and visibility. Avoid covers, fonts or fittings that obscure the number.
When collecting a used car, check more than the number. Arrange a car repair inspection for leaks, warning lights, tyres, brakes and accident repairs. A preventive car servicing package also gives you a known maintenance starting point.
Bid With the Registration Plan Already Decided
Good car plate bidding is careful preparation: decide the owner, choose the right series, rank the numbers honestly and know when the car will be registered. That removes most avoidable surprises.
The plate may be noticed first, but the car’s condition matters more. KY Auto’s Singapore workshop can inspect and service a newly purchased vehicle so ownership starts on solid ground.
FAQ
1.What is the minimum bid for a car plate in Singapore?
The minimum is currently S$1,000 inclusive of GST, in S$1 increments. Each submission also has a non-refundable S$18.53 service fee.
2.Can I change or cancel my bid after submitting it?
No. A submitted VRN bid cannot be amended or withdrawn, so check the choices, owner details and amount before confirming.
3.Can I put a successfully bid number on another person’s car?
No. The bidder’s details should match the intended registered owner, including when a company will own the vehicle.
4.What happens if my car plate bid is unsuccessful?
LTA refunds the unsuccessful bid amount through the applicable method. The S$18.53 service fee is not refunded.
5.How long can I keep a successful bid number before using it?
It is valid for one year from 12pm on the day after results are announced. Extend it before expiry if necessary, but the charges are substantial.
6.Must I pay again to put the number on my existing car?
Yes. Replacement currently costs S$327 inclusive of GST, and the physical plates must be changed within three calendar days.
7.Do I need a workshop after changing the car plate?
A routine plate change needs no mechanical repair, but inspect a used car before purchase. A perfect plate says nothing about its battery, brakes or suspension.
